LESSONS

The Deirdre Lobo-D’Cunha Music Studio offers private lessons in voice, piano (beginning and intermediate levels), theory, sight reading, cantoring technique, drama technique, and stage deportment.  Please arrive promptly at your scheduled lesson time. Come in, there is no need to wait outside.  If the instructor is wrapping up a lesson with a student prior to your lesson time, please come in, have a seat and wait patiently, and quietly for your time.

It is important that students bring all the books needed for the lesson, recorder, or tape for their lessons (vocalists only).  Students who forget their books will not play or sing during the lesson, but will use the time to learn music theory.  Books suggested by the teacher are to be purchased by the student and brought to every lesson.

All lessons include a 5-minute “wrap-up” period, during which time Deirdre makes sure that the student understands the homework assignments.  This is an appropriate time for parents or students to ask questions pertaining to the assignments or practice.  Students are required to keep to the studio schedule and respect other student’s lesson time by arriving promptly at their scheduled time.

MAKE UP LESSON POLICY

Private lessons are held at the same time every week, as much as possible.   Student will not be allowed to cancel for tuition credit.  Make-up lessons will be permitted within reason, and if the teacher is informed at least one day in advance depending upon the teacher’s  availability only in cases of emergency or illness.   Other reasons, are to be discussed with the teacher in order for a make-up lesson to be scheduled, and this will depend upon the teacher’s availability.  If the number of make-up lessons being requested is frequent, then the student will be requested to move their regular lesson day to a day that does not conflict with other things, of course depending upon availability.

If the teacher is going to be on vacation, you will be given 1 month’s notice.  If the teacher is unable to teach due to some other reason like a concert, as she is a performing artist, she will let the parents or student know at least 1 month in advance, and make-up lessons will be scheduled.   When the teacher is sick, she will try to inform the student in advance of the lesson, and a make-up lesson will be scheduled.  As a family person, there are times when Ms. Lobo-D’Cunha has to attend her son’s sports tournements local or out of town.  In all these cases sufficient notice will be given, except of course in the case of illness, and make-up lessons will be scheduled.  This does takes a good amount of flexibility on the part of the teacher as well as the parent(s) or student(s).

If a student is going to be away during the Summer, Spring break, or Winter break, the teacher is to be informed at least 1 ½ month in advance.

A student may be excused for missing a lesson for a bonafide and valid emergency if the teacher is notified one day in advance:
- It is the student’s responsibility to request a make-up time for excused absences
- There are no refunds for excused or unexcused absences
- No refunds, tuition credits, discounts or make-up time will be given for UNEXCUSED absences
- If a student does not show up for a lesson, without any notice to the teacher, then that lesson will not be
  made up

It will be determined whether or not a lesson is excused, based on the following examples:
- Illness or injury which prevents school/work attendance - Excused– Make-up option
- Any absence where the teacher is notified by 8:00 a.m. one day before the day of the lesson – May be
excused depending on the reason – Make-up option
- Lack of transportation – Not Excused – No Make-up
- Didn't practice for this week - Not Excused– No Make-up
- Forgot lesson, or "inconvenience" - Not Excused- No Make up

PRACTICE POLICY

A student cannot learn music by just going to lessons.  It requires devotion, self-discipline, and time.  A minimum of 15-20 minutes practice every day is expected per subject. Assignments are not excused until they are near perfection. Quality of practice is at least as important as quantity.  A quiet atmosphere helps to ensure quality practice time.  Practice sheets can now be printed off the website.  Please print and fill out these sheets and return to Deirdre every lesson with a parent's intial.  Bringing your practice sheet to the lesson completed is mandatory.

Having a desire to learn the music is important and key to learning. If a student does not want to learn and does not practice, then the student will not learn. The teacher makes learning music a fun and enjoyable experience for each student while the student is here, but at home, the student must have a self-sustained desire from within that is reflected by a desire to practice and work hard.

STUDIO PARKING
